Causes, Diagnosis, and When to Seek Help

Infertility is diagnosed when a couple is unable to achieve a natural pregnancy:
After 12 months of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse in women ≤35 years old.
OR
after 6 months of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse in women >35 years old.
The cause may stem from male or female factors affecting fertility or a combination of both. This article shall focus only on female infertility.
Infertility can be further classified into primary and secondary infertility. Primary infertility occurs when a couple has never been able to achieve a pregnancy, whereas secondary infertility occurs when a couple has managed to conceive at least once previously, regardless of the outcome.
